Virtually no embedded nav systems allow map or systems updates over-the-air. Yet Waze users, despite their palm-sized smartphone screens, enjoy major advantages over often-clunky onboard systems.
WAZE VOICES FOR ANDROID DRIVER
With Waze running on a USB-connected Android phone, the Cruze’s center touchscreen flashed the hallmarks of any Android Auto app: Larger touch targets, a simplified user interface and voice-centric commands, all designed to reduce driver distraction. Chevrolet invited me to play guinea pig as well, taking a spin with the more safely-integrated Waze in a Cruze hatchback in New York. Waze is set to go live on the Google Play Store, following about two months of beta testing from roughly 5,000 volunteers.
WAZE VOICES FOR ANDROID DRIVERS
(Only Uber drivers and minivan pilots stick those dorky phone cradles on their windshields).īut on or around July 26, Waze will make its long-awaited appearance on the Big Screen of automobiles, with Waze for Android Auto. But the app has also been responsible for more one-handed driving than McDonald’s, as drivers peek at smartphones and prep for that left turn in 300 yards. The Google-owned Waze rides shotgun with roughly 80 million global users, who log more than 6 billion miles each month. May wind up posting it for giggles after a test.Waze has become the killer app of automobiles, the most indispensable navigation tool since the folding map. I loved the John Cleese TomTom voice so I'm going to try to put together what's available and see how the voice pack will work as-is. "in zero point one mile", "in a quarter of a mile", "in a half a mile" can be replaced with approximations of meters or yards, but 1 mile = 1760 yards or 1609 meters, and there's not really a good way around it unless we figure out a good substitute or someone's willing to put up with a different voice for it, or if someone were enterprising enough, find clips of the voice on youtube, in movies, etc. The one glaring problem besides the obvious missing "Police/Accident/Hazard reported ahead" files, is that most of the TomTom voice packs are Imperial/Metric so there's files for "50,80,100,200,300,400,500,600,700,800" and "meters" and "yards" but none for English in the few packs I tried.
Made a list of the sound files available and mapped them from the TomTom files to Waze files. I found a pretty large pack of TomTom voices, unpacked the files and converted them from.
I also had Phil Miller downloaded, upgraded Waze and forgot to grab it before they nuked it. I couldn't remember if Yoda was a native voice I removed him from the list. : Updated with Morgan Freeman and Spanish Star Wars voicesĪdded Safe Mode Kids to the list, thanks again. To the following users for either posting request threads, the files themselves or instructions.
